The Malverne school district brought together the Lakeview, Lynbrook and Malverne communities Friday night for its annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life.
The evening was directed by Maurice W. Downing Primary School Principal Margaret McDaid, who opened the ceremony with words of inspiration. “It is important tonight that we honor the 83rd anniversary of his legacy. The fact that we are here together, in this room, means that Dr. King’s dream continues to become a reality.”
The program included an encouraging and spiritual invocation from Rev. Lisa Williamson and performances from each of the schools that centered around the themes of peace, love and hope.
The district also handed out two Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards, which had been created in an effort to unite the three communities of the district and are bestowed each year upon those who exemplify the positive attributes of Dr. King’s perseverance, commitment, dedication, compassion and service.
This year’s honorees were Dr. Michele C. Reed, a 1986 graduate of Malverne who now two of her own medical practices and is the district’s physician, and Doris S. Sherr, secretary at Davison Avenue School for 25 years who also supports all Davison organizations. to read more about the recipients.
