School, sports, dancing and playdates. This is the life that every 11-year-old girl should enjoy.
But Our Lady of Peace sixth grader Mary DePinto has had to contend with cancer too. Since March, the Valley Stream girl, has been undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and other medical treatments for Ewing's sarcoma, a malignant bone tumor.
The close-knit OLP community has held various fundraisers including a Dress Down Day, Spring Fling Dance and Walk-a-thon so far, with all the proceeds going to Mary's family. Now, on Saturday, they'll be holding a Tag Sale, where one person's trash could very well be another's treasures and all the purchases will support Mary as she continues her fight against cancer.
The tag sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 29 in the OLP schoolyard or in the case of rain, it will be moved into the school's gym.
Speaking to the Herald in June, OLP teacher, Karen VonBraunsberg, said Mary has remained very positive, saying:
"She has a wonderful outlook, she has support from her family and she has support from her school, which is her family as well.”
