Waverly Park Forms Dare to Care Art Partnership

Students share work with residents of Bristal Assisted Living at North Woodmere.

Under the guidance of art teacher Carol Henderson, the students of Lynbrook’s
Waverly Park School formed the Dare to Care Art Partnership, creating a special display of their artwork and sculptures, which they shared with the residents of the Bristal Assisted Living at North Woodmere.

The students visited the Bristal on May 18 to make a special presentation to the
residents. Students discussed the method as well as the inspiration for creating each piece. The display they put together for the Bristal was the culmination of a study of famous artists and the movements they inspired, including Andy Warhol, Jean Arp, Vincent Van Gogh, Red Grooms and Modigliani.

“The benefits of this partnership are twofold,” said Principal Lucille McAssey. “It
will help our children to develop public speaking and presentation skills while providing a beautiful display of artwork for the seniors to enjoy, creating a generational bond between young students and mature adults.”

“We loved it,” said Bristal resident Lenore Schwartz, who is an artist herself.

“When I was their age, I loved drawing and painting,” added fellow resident
Sylvia Meyers. “All these years later, I still enjoy creating art.”

Their artwork will remain on display for the next few weeks for the residents to
enjoy. Ms. Henderson plans to continue the program next year, presenting a new exhibit every one or two months. The program was funded through a $200 Newsday FutureCorps grant.
