Thursday Nights with Great SCOT!!!

I’ve mentioned this before but I think it is worth repeating and explaining a bit.

Each Thursday Night at 8pm from July 11th through August 29th there will be an indoor astronomy presentation followed by an opportunity to look through telescopes at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center in Jones Beach State Park. Members of the Amateur Observers’ Society of New York (AOS), an astronomy club on Long Island, will be there as volunteers to show you the wonders of the night sky. Many of these folks will bring their personal telescopes and they are looking forward to showing you what can be seen from one of the darkest spots in Nassau County.

The really good news is that AOS is now the proud owner of a 20 inch dobsonian reflector telescope and it will be available to look through at these Thursday night sessions. This telescope was recently obtained through a grant from the Sierra Club, Long Island Group and has been named Great SCOT (Sierra Club Observing Telescope). This is believed to be the largest publicly available telescope in Nassau County. In addition to Great SCOT, there will be other telescopes of many shapes and sizes.  The astronomy presentation will be held rain or shine but the observing is subject to clear skies.

The bad news about this is that there is a $4 per person fee and you need to register beforehand by calling 516-785-3674 or 516-780-3295. The fee is charged by the NYS Parks Dept to help defer their extra costs related to the program.

I am a member of AOS and hope to see you at Jones Beach one Thursday night. The attached picture is not Great SCOT but it looks like it.
