Lynbrook Defeats Sewanhaka, 33-7

Owls finish season at 7-1, top seed in Conference III playoffs.

Travis Lock returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Lynbrook (7-1) never looked back en route to a 33-7 victory over host Sewanhaka (6-2) on Saturday. The Owls head into the Conference III playoffs as the top-seeded team.

"I think our plan was to try to play all phases of football," said Lynbrook coach Steve Locicero. "We tried to play special teams, defense and some great offense."

The Owls certainly accomplished all those things, compiling 33 points — 14 of them off special teams — and not allowing Sewanhaka to score until the last minute of the game. Quite a feat considering both teams were 6-1 heading into Saturday's game. "They're a great football team," Locicero said, "and they're extremely well-coached."

After Lock put the Owls on the board early, Luke Spitzer ran back a punt 89 yards for a touchdown with 3:11 remaining in the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter, quarterback Paul Magloire took the ball 50 yards for a touchdown with 9:34 left in the half. The extra point was blocked, making the score 20-0 Owls.

At the end of the game, Magloire credited the guys in front of him as the reason for his untouched run into the end zone. "O-line … that's all I gotta say … O-line," he said. "They block, I just run."

Lock scored two touchdowns in two minutes in the 4th quarter, one from one yard out and the other a 12-yard run to give the Owls a commanding 33-0 lead. The score may have been even higher if Lock had not fumbled at Sewanhaka's 5-yard line earlier in the 3rd quarter.

The Owls defense gave up just one touchdown, a 1-yard run by Sewanhaka's Brian Wint, with just over a minute left to play. Moments later, the Owls gave their coach a Gatorade shower to celebrate their entering the playoffs as the top seed.

"We like having the target on our backs now," Magloire said. We just keep on pushin'."

Locicero added "We got a lot more work to do but I'm real proud of the kids. I love 'em — they're great."
