Lynbrook Soccer Day Raises Funds to Support Players

Money collected at Saturday's event will help both current team members and two former Lynbrook soccer stars, who were badly injured this summer in an accident.

Lynbrook soccer supporters gathered at this past Saturday to help raise money in honor of current and former players.

Donations were accepted at the entrance of the game, going towards funding of the Lynbrook Soccer Club games, scholarships and recovery funds for and Kevin Becker. The two former Lynbrook High School students and soccer players suffered serious brain and head injuries in an accident this summer.

“The primary focus [of Soccer Day] was orignially to promote soccer in the community and give the kids the chance to showcase themselves in front of a large community crowd,” said coach Josh Berlin. "In time, the parents club decided to coordinate fundraising at the soccer events."

Four games were played - both JV and varsity boys and girls teams faced Malverne/East Rockaway High School.

Lynbrook Soccer Day began with only the boys soccer teams; the girls teams became involved two years ago. Part of the money earned throughout the year at various fundraising events, including Soccer Day, will go towards scholarships that are given at the end of the year. One scholarship will go to a male player and the other to a female. Zides was the first receipent of the scholarship two years ago.

Additional funds raised will go to the recovery funds that have been set up for Zides and Becker. Both played soccer at Lynbrook High School – junior varsity for one year and varsity for three years. The players and their parents played a large part in the success of the Lynbrook soccer program.

“Our objective after today’s event is to give a portion of the proceeds to the recovery funds,” said Tara Milillo, co-president of the Lynbrook Soccer Parents Club. Milillo and Karen Feltkamp work together in coordinating fundraising activities for the soccer teams.

Fundraising events will continue throughout the season. Visit the Lynbrook Soccer website for more information about upcoming games, events and how to donate to the Zides and Becker recovery funds.
