Runners Tackle Hot 4K at Hempstead Lake

Photos from the 2011 Long Island Summer Run Series race at Hempstead Lake State Park.

More than 1,200 runners braved the heat to race through Hempstead Lake State Park in West Hempstead Monday night.

They tackled the 4K (2.49 miles) course as part of the 2011 Long Island Summer Run Series, which lets runners compete at various New York State parks in the area.

Michael Nehr, 31, of West Babylon, finished first with a time of 12:36, followed by Shaun McGrath, 32, of Lynbrook, and Austin Coneys, 17, of Centerport, who completed the course in 12:57 and 13:11 respectively.

Stefanie Braun, 20, of Dix Hills, was the first female to cross the finish line at 14:45.

Malvernite Chris Koegel, 27, placed sixth overall with a time of 13:23.

Various running clubs and teams were represented in the race including Team in Training, which raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Bellmore Striders and Northport Running Club.
