Spencer, Alexander Spur Mules to Victory Over Seahawks

Seniors Ronald Spencer and Corey Alexander led Malverne High School varsity boys basketball to win against Cold Spring Harbor.

The Mules continued their winning streak Tuesday night as they defeated the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks, 63-48.

Leading them to their third straight victory were seniors Ronald Spencer, who scored 19 points in the game, and Cory Alexander, with 16, taking the Mules to 3-0 for the season.

The game was never in doubt for the Mules as they got out to a quick 12-4 lead and never looked back.

Their athleticism was superior to that of the Seahawks, who resorted to outside shots for their points.

"I thought we moved the ball well throughout the game and did a good job against their zone defense," said Assistant Coach Walter Aksionoff. "Ronnie really stepped up for us with his 19 points."

Turning Point: The Seahawks made a small run coming out of halftime to come within three points of the Mules, 33-30. They appeared to be a little bit more organized and started to hit their outside shots, including a three-pointer from their leading scorer Anthony Terraciano. But guard Cory Alexander put a stop to that with a big three pointer of his own that got his team back on track. From there they pulled ahead of Cold Spring Harbor thanks to a 14-point run that gave them a 50-37 third quarter lead.

Coach's Corner: "We're still in a learning curve after losing some of our big players from last year," said Aksionoff. [Anthony] Moultre and Xavier [Bernard] are starting to step up for us though.

"We committed to many blatant fouls and we need to stop doing that," he added. "You can't guard a free throw and we give teams too many easy points that way."

Bottom Line: The Mules were too quick and athletic for the Seahawks, and it showed in almost every aspect of the game. They got to loose balls faster and out-rebounded them by double figures. At times, they could have worked the ball around the perimeter more instead of taking quick unnecessary shots, but the sky is the limit for this team.
