Undefeated Lynbrook Girls Swim Team Wins Conference Title

Several Lynbrook HS records were also broken this season.

By Rosemary Leonetti

The Lynbrook Owls girls varsity swim team clinched the conference championship title on Oct. 18, finishing the season with a 9-0 record. This marks the team’s first undefeated season since the start of the girls swimming program in 1994.

The team started out the year as the lowest seed in Conference III, expecting to have a difficult season, so the victory proved to be that much sweeter. In the process, sophomore Kali Nembach and her teammates broke six school records. Kali broke records in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. With her teammates Jennifer Gannon, Naya Krcic and Samantha Woll, she also broke the record in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Proving to be equally skilled in academics, the team was named a New York State Scholar-Athlete team, building on a 17-year tradition for the girls swim team.

“These young athletes swam outdoors at the Greis Park pool from Aug. 25 through Nov. 9, proving their determination and love of the sport,” said coach Dorothy Amitrano. “Assistant coach Jason Melecio and I congratulate them on a superb season.”
