Valley Stream North H.S Senior Jillian Sarro shines in school, sports and community.

Dedication is just one word to describe Valley Stream North senior and Malverne resident Jillian Sarro.

Not only has she excelled in academics, but she has also been active in sports and her community, building her character and preparing for a future career in teaching.

Since ninth grade, Sarro has played junior varsity basketball and volleyball, varsity track, basketball and volleyball. Not only did she participate in these sports, but it also led her to receive awards, such as the Coaches Award and All-Conference for basketball.

To receive the Coaches award a student must demonstrate leadership in a sport, display good team spirit and always encourage other students on the team. Sarro embodies all of these qualities.

Outside of sports, Sarro has long list of volunteer and extra-curricular activities that includes being a member of the Student Peer Organization (SPO), the Physical Education Leadership Program, the marching band and vice president of the Valley Stream North Athletic Society.

Focusing on her future career of as a teacher, Sarro has devoted her spare time to volunteering with Adelphi University’s Early Childhood Learning Center. She spent her summers as a counselor at Malverne’s summer recreation program, and worked with Life Skills at North.

“I volunteer for teaching a lot because it is what I enjoy to do,” stated Sarro.

Sarro has also devoted her time to the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead through the Physical Education Leadership Program and  participated in the Island Harvest Food Drive.

She has received the Student of the Month Award in her freshman and senior years. She also was recently awared the Nassau Zone Outstanding Physcial Education Student Award.

Sarro was recently accepted to SUNY Potsdam and is excited to start her college career. With all the of hard work and dedication to the various sports and volunteer efforts, Jillian Sarro is sure to succeed in college, her teaching career and whatever else awaits her in the future.
