East Meadow was considered the underdog against defending Long Island champion Freeport this past weekend. Furthermore, the Red Devils had been the lone team to defeat the Jets this season. However, East Meadow gained the lead midway through the fourth quarter courtesy of 5-yard touchdown from James D’Elia to go up by one en route to the title.

The Jets defense took over as they forced the Red Devils, a team with a normally potent offense, to turn the ball over on downs and eventually run out the clock. Robbie Healy scored three times to break the Nassau County single season touchdown record with 36 total. Quarterback Dylan Curry racked up 202 total yards and two touchdowns. East Meadow won the Conference I title for the first time since 2006 and will now face William Floyd in the Long Island championship on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Stony Brook University.

Conference II Championship:

No. 1 Garden City (11-0) def. No. 2 Wantagh (9-2), 35-7

Garden City has become arguably the top team on Long Island in any conference, as the Trojans mproved to 11-0 and won the Conference II county title with a dominant performance against Wantagh. Mark Ellis scored three times, including a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown, to set a new school record with 20 total touchdowns this season. Garden City has now outscored its opponents 389-50 in the team's 11 wins this season.

On the other side, Wantagh concluded its season just short of the title with its second loss to Garden City this fall. Matt Balzano provided a bright spot for the Warriors with a 3-yard run for a score in the second quarter. Wantagh, which previously defeated New Hyde Park and Elmont to reach the finals, gave up a season-high in points to a powerful opposing offense.

Garden City will advance to play Newfield HS in the Long Island championship on Friday, Nov. 25 at 4:30 p.m. at Hofstra University.

Conference III Championship:

No. 2 Lawrence (10-1) def. No. 4 Plainedge (7-4), 64-34

Lawrence set a new season-high in points scored in a 64-34 win over Plainedge to claim the Conference III county title. Once down 34-33 in the third quarter, the Golden Tornadoes scored the final 31 points and cruised to the win on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Joey Capobianco set a new Nassau County playoff record with 333 yards passing and three touchdowns, two of which went to junior receiver Eddie Robinson.

Junior Tyler Fredericks scored three rushing touchdowns and brothers Ryan, a senior, and Jordan, a freshman, each scored twice. The key for Lawrence in the playoffs has been being able to finish games off, as the team outscored Hewlett, Lynbrook and Plainedge by an astounding 53-0 margin to close out its previous playoff games. Lawrence will play in the Long Island championship on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 12 p.m. at Stony Brook University.

Conference IV Championship:

No. 2 Roosevelt (9-2) def. No. 6 East Rockaway (6-5), 21-14

East Rockaway may have been the best team in Conference IV down the stretch, defeating No. 3 West Hempstead and No. 1 Locust Valley in the playoffs by sizable margins. However, on Thursday night, the Rocks fell short of their first Nassau County title with a seven-point loss to the Rough Riders, who claimed their first title since 2006.

Nick Ulip caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Sean Bohan and Luke Fahrenkrug ran in an 8-yard touchdown in the effort. Despite a last-minute chance by Bohan to tie the score, Roosevelt hung on to defeat East Rockaway for the second time this season. The Rocks will part with 19 seniors after a very successful season.

Class AA New York State Semifinals/Finals:

MacArthur (18-2-0) wrapped up its 2011 season with a New York State Class AA title to its name. First, the Lady Generals defeated Brockport HS on Saturday afternoon by a 2-1 score. The one goal was the first given up by the team in the playoffs this season. Arianna Montefusco and Katie Gerdes each scored goals in the second half for MacArthur.

A day later, MacArthur completed its quest for the title with a 1-0 win over Arlington HS. Jill Mulholland, the team's leading scorer this season as a senior forward, scored early in the first half. Jenny Scro, Meghan Dockweiler and the defense took over from there to help the team to the championship. The Lady Generals finished the season on a 13-game winning streak as well.

Class A New York State Semifinals/Finals:

The Lady Cyclones (15-2-4) claimed the New York State Class A title for the eighth time in school history. Following a triple overtime win over Division for the county title and a 1-0 win over Islip for the Long Island title, South Side traveled upstate to defeat Williamsville South HS by a 5-2 score in the state semifinals on Saturday. Down 2-1 at the half, the girls scored four second-half goals to seal the victory. Julie Beyer scored a hat trick and Christina Klaum scored twice to increase her playoff total to 11 goals.

On Sunday, South Side needed regulation plus four overtime periods to defeat Somers HS by a 1-0 score for the title. Katie Ford scored the game's only goal with a minute remaining in the final overtime and Kelsey Berki stopped 10 shots to seal the win for her team. The loss was the first for Somers, which had won 20 of 23 games this season.

Field Hockey (all games hosted at Cicero-North Syracuse HS)

Class B New York State Semifinals/Finals:

Garden City has been dominant all season long, cruising through Nassau and Suffolk County competition to make the state semifinals last weekend. The Lady Trojans defeated Maine-Endwell by a 2-1 score in overtime with the game-winning goal coming from Catherine McTiernan and the first coming from Jenna Fuchs. Alexandra Bruno, who had scored in every playoff game up to the semifinals, was kept off of the board, but did pick up an assist.

On Sunday, Garden City faced off against the team that it lost to in the 2010 state finals: Lakeland. Despite the new season, the result was the same as the Lady Trojans fell for the first time this year by a 3-1 final score. Charlotte Castronovo scored the lone goal for her team, but the lead was well in hand by then for Lakeland. Garden City finishes the season with a stellar 17-1-1 overall record.
